Designing Recycled Glass Lighting

Designed and developed as part of Tribal Textiles’ Glass Recycling Project, launched in 2018. The project aimed to transform discarded glass into striking, functional home décor while keeping recycling and shipping efficiency at the forefront. All pieces were designed with flat-packing in mind to allow easy global shipping, blending sustainable practice with contemporary design.

I oversaw every stage of development, from initial concepts to final designs, with sustainability and practicality at the core. Beyond design, I led the photography, produced the catalogue, and created social media promotions to launch the collection. I also played a key role in building the Tribal Textiles glass workshop itself, growing it from small-scale beginnings into a successful, income-generating project for the company.

Confetti • A vibrant chandelier combining slumped and clay-moulded glass in geometric shapes, with a bold palette of blues.

Cascade • A collapsible chandelier featuring slumped glass panels suspended from a recycled metal frame with removable hooks and chains, enabling complete flat-packing.

Zuwa • Crafted from sliced, slumped wine bottle rings tied with reclaimed copper wire on a hand-wrapped frame.

Mvula • Named after the Nyanja word for raindrops, this chandelier combines kiln-slumped glass with recycled electrical wiring for a layered, organic form.

Mphepo • Created from crushed glass slumped into handcrafted moulds in the kiln. The design produces a delicate clinking sound in a gentle breeze, inspiring its name, Mphepo - meaning wind in Nyanja.
