Home Décor Design

The Matika Collection • Designed for Tribal Textiles, Zambia; An ethically handcrafted home décor brand based in the Zambian bush, drawing inspiration from Africa.

Bògòlanfini, or “mud cloth,” is a handmade Malian cotton fabric traditionally dyed with fermented mud. It has an important place in traditional Malian culture and has, more recently, become a symbol of Malian cultural identity.

I took inspiration from the classic Mali mud cloth pattern and translated the symbols into the signature Tribal Textiles batik twist. ‘Matika’ means ‘mud’ in the local Ch’nyanja dialect in the remote corner of Zambia where Tribal Textiles is based.
